Amyloidosis Centers of Expertise in the Netherlands

If you or your physician suspect amyloidosis, it may be important to be referred to a center with specific expertise in this rare disease. At these centers, specialists from different disciplines work closely together to establish the diagnosis, develop a treatment plan, and provide long-term care and follow-up.

National Center of Expertise: UMC Groningen (GrACE)

The Groningen Amyloidosis Center of Expertise (GrACE), part of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), is the national amyloidosis center of expertise in the Netherlands. The center has more than fifty years of experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of all forms of amyloidosis.
Its multidisciplinary team includes cardiologists, internists, hematologists, neurologists, nephrologists, clinical geneticists, and nuclear medicine specialists who work together to provide comprehensive patient care.

National Amyloidosis Care Network

In the Netherlands, patients with amyloidosis can benefit from a collaborative network of university hospitals. This network ensures access to specialized diagnostics, treatment options, and clinical research.

Key Centers within the Network

For Patients with ATTR-CM

ATTR-CM (transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy) is a form of amyloidosis that primarily affects the heart. For patients with ATTR-CM, the center of expertise in Groningen works closely with specialized centers in Utrecht, Rotterdam, and Maastricht. This collaboration allows patients to receive care closer to home while still benefiting from the latest expertise, diagnostic techniques, and treatment developments available within the national network.

Referral to a Center of Expertise

Referral to a center of expertise is usually arranged through your general practitioner (GP), cardiologist, or another treating specialist. The center will then assess where further investigations or treatment can best take place.
